Originally written as an Americana-inspired desert composition exploring themes of inner listening, transformation, and emotional healing, Desert Soul became the foundation for an entirely new musical journey.
Rather than approaching the project as a traditional remix, singer-songwriter Tara Beier and producer Steve Stout chose to rebuild the song from its emotional core outward.
Every instrument, texture, and rhythmic decision was reconsidered from the ground up. Instead of simply rearranging the existing production, they deconstructed the emotional and musical foundation before reconstructing it into an entirely new composition—creating something that feels less like an alternate version and more like the song's next life.
One of the most challenging—and ultimately rewarding—aspects of the process was discovering how to evolve a song without abandoning its identity.
Rather than writing an entirely new chorus, Beier discovered that a single lyrical phrase from the original chorus held the key to an entirely new direction. That line became the foundation for a new chorus, allowing the remix to grow organically from the original song's emotional core.
The remix challenged Beier as a producer, arranger, and composer. It reinforced the idea that transformation does not require abandoning one's foundation. Instead, some of the greatest creative growth comes from trusting one's roots deeply enough to build something entirely new upon them.
That realization ultimately became the heart of Desert Soul (REMIX)—a musical expression of the belief that meaningful transformation begins not by abandoning the past, but by reimagining it.

Drawing from Tara Beier’s classical piano training and lifelong connection to the California desert, producer Steve Stout and Beier reimagined the original arrangement through entirely new instrumentation, textures, and production techniques.
Rather than simply updating the existing recording, the pair rebuilt its sonic landscape from the ground up. Guitar swells from the original recording were pitched upward to create an ethereal opening, while reversed acoustic guitar layered with spacious reverb introduced a dreamlike atmosphere. A newly composed piano arrangement became a central emotional voice throughout the remix, bridging the organic warmth of the original with its expanded cinematic world.
To further transform the sound, the production introduced lush analog synthesizers—including the Roland JX-10, Moog synthesizers, and Vongon synth textures—alongside evolving ambient swells created with the OP-1. The bridge was reimagined using Mellotron strings, adding a timeless, orchestral quality that deepens the emotional arc of the composition.
While much of the remix explores expansive electronic textures, the production intentionally preserves the warmth of live instrumentation through a Fender Precision Bass and a newly recorded acoustic guitar captured with a ribbon microphone, bringing the composition back to an intimate, organic conclusion.
Every sonic decision was made not to replace the original song, but to reveal another dimension of it. The result became more than a remix—it became a complete reconstruction, bridging Americana, ambient music, cinematic composition, and vintage electronic production while remaining rooted in the emotional spirit of the original recording.

The visual world of Desert Soul (REMIX) expands the universe of Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree, weaving together the desert landscape, Joshua trees, the night sky, and the cosmos into a cinematic meditation on beauty, spirituality, and humanity's connection to something greater.
Through this visual language, Tara Beier explores the idea that the same Creator who shaped the desert also shaped the heavens—and that humanity exists somewhere in between, searching for the divine.
Through visual storytelling and music, Beier seeks to create space for audiences to slow down, listen more deeply, and reconnect with the soul.

Transformation has become the quiet thread that connects my work.
Whether through music, film, or visual storytelling, I’m drawn to the moments where healing begins—where grief becomes hope, where stillness becomes wonder, and where the familiar is reimagined into something entirely new.
Desert Soul (REMIX) became one of the most challenging and rewarding creative experiences of my career. Rather than creating something entirely different, I set out to discover how far a song could evolve while remaining true to its emotional core. In the process, I discovered that transformation isn’t about leaving something behind—it’s about listening more deeply to what is already there.
Nature has always been my greatest teacher.
The desert taught me stillness.
The night sky taught me wonder.
It’s almost saying that the same Creator who shaped the desert also shaped the heavens—and we’re somewhere in between, searching for Him.
If there’s one hope I have for this music, it’s that it creates a quiet space where people can pause, reflect, and reconnect—with nature, with themselves, and with something greater than themselves. Because you don’t have to start over. You can remain grounded in who you are while continuing to grow, rebuild from the inside out—and reach upward.

Tara Beier is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, producer, filmmaker, and Recording Academy Voting Member whose cinematic work explores the intersection of nature, healing, faith, and transformation. Classically trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music from the age of five, she blends Americana, cinematic folk, ambient soundscapes, and contemporary production into immersive musical experiences rooted in emotional honesty.
Born in Vancouver and now based in California, Beier’s multicultural heritage—Filipino, British, Austrian, and Scottish—brings a rich cross-cultural perspective to her music. After becoming a U.S. citizen in 2024, she embraces her identity as an American immigrant artist, creating work that reflects resilience, belonging, and creative renewal.
Her path to music was anything but conventional. With a degree in criminology and an early passion for justice reform, Beier originally intended to pursue law before portraying folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie in a biopic awakened her creative calling. That experience led to a career spanning songwriting, filmmaking, production, and live performance.
Since her debut album Hero & the Sage (produced by Bret Higgins of Great Lake Swimmers), Beier has continued to expand her artistic voice through Super Bloom (produced by two-time GRAMMY® nominee Ken Coomer of Wilco), Her Story, and Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree. Her work led to her signing with Manimal Records, the acclaimed Los Angeles independent label whose roster includes visionary artists such as Yoko Ono, Moby, Duran Duran, Warpaint, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Bat for Lashes.
Released in 2025, Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree, produced by Steve Stout (Lifehouse), became Beier’s most ambitious artistic statement to date. The album earned international recognition from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste Magazine, NBC Palm Springs, and numerous international publications, while exploring grief, motherhood, spiritual awakening, and transformation through the landscapes of the Mojave Desert. The project also inspired Desert Soul (REMIX), representing the next evolution of that creative journey.
Throughout her career, Beier’s work has been featured by major media outlets, performed across the United States, Canada, and Germany, and recognized through appearances at venues including The Troubadour, Pappy & Harriet’s, Whisky A Go Go, Rockwood Music Hall, and Riverfest alongside MGMT. Her music has also supported public initiatives, including the Biden–Harris Inauguration’s “100 Days, 100 Nurses” campaign.
Beyond music, Beier’s work extends into filmmaking, advocacy, and visual storytelling. Steve Stout is a Nashville-based guitarist, songwriter, producer, and recording engineer whose musical reach spans chart-topping rock, cinematic folk, and genre-defying indie. Best known as the lead guitarist for Lifehouse since 2015, Stout is also one half of the band ØZWALD, a collaborative project with Lifehouse frontman Jason Wade. Together, they’ve released five full-length albums since 2019, all tracked in the studio the duo built themselves—an experimental haven where “no rules” fuel the creativity.
In 2023, Stout stepped out as a solo artist with his debut full-length album Dairy Made (via Allswell Records), a ten-song collection that marked his evolution from arena rocker to indie-folk storyteller. The standout single “Some Folks”—a track born out of a fever dream and a test amp session—was selected as a KCRW “Today’s Top Tune”, drawing comparisons to Fruit Bats, Kurt Vile, and the sunny disorientation of 70s psych-folk. As KCRW put it, Stout’s shift toward a “less lo-fi” and more textured sound suits his nuanced songwriting and off-kilter production style.
Alongside his solo and band work, Stout continues to write for sync, score film, produce and mix for other artists, and collaborate widely across genres. He’s previously performed with Kiefer Sutherland, Switchfoot, Blondfire (Warner Bros.), and Lost Beach, and holds a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from Berklee College of Music. Whether onstage, behind the console, or lost in a late-night mix session, Stout remains a restless creator—always chasing the next sound, the next story, the next song.

Alex is a Grammy Award-winning audio engineer, mixer, and producer with a wide-ranging portfolio across Rock, Pop, Hip-hop, Electronic, Orchestral, and Americana. Skilled in Pro Tools, Ableton, and Logic, he brings deep technical expertise and creative insight to every project he touches.
Alex began his career in 2007 as a live sound engineer at the Key Club in West Hollywood, mixing for artists like The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Public Enemy, and more. After earning a B.S. in Music Industry from USC’s Thornton School of Music in 2009, he joined The Village Studios in Los Angeles. Rising through the ranks to senior engineer, Alex has worked on everything from albums and film scores to live broadcasts, while continuing to freelance and produce original music.
In 2019, he became a voting member of the Recording Academy and won a Grammy at the 64th Annual Awards for his engineering work on Jon Batiste’s We Are.
Alex is also the main engineer for Tara Beier’s album Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree, and has played a central role in several of her projects. He engineered her covers album Her Story, which celebrates both iconic and overlooked female songwriters of the 1960s and ’70s—including Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Sybille Baier, and Barbara Keith. As Tara’s go-to engineer at The Village, Alex has been a consistent source of technical excellence, creative support, and collaborative spirit.
Goat Mountain Recording Studios, Landers, CA (Engineered by Pat Kearns)
Pat Kearns served as second engineer on select tracks from Tara Beier’s album Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree, lending his technical expertise and deep musical sensibility to the project. A respected producer, engineer, and musician, Pat is best known for his work on Guitar Romantic by The Exploding Hearts, and as the frontman of Portland’s Blue Skies for Black Hearts. His production and engineering credits include artists like Jerry Joseph, Walter Salas-Humara, and Pat MacDonald.
Now based in the Mojave Desert, Pat and his wife Susan built Goat Mountain Studio, a solar-powered, off-grid recording facility near Joshua Tree. The studio merges vintage analog gear with modern tech in a one-of-a-kind desert setting, offering a creative environment that’s both rugged and refined.
Pat’s contributions to Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree reflect his ability to support and enhance an artist’s vision with precision, warmth, and respect for the music.
